ABC FUN KEYS REVISION HISTORY
-----------------------------
I owe a great deal of thanks to many users of the ABC FUN KEYS program for
their ideas which you see incorporated below. I sincerely welcome any
suggestions you may have that will make this program more enjoyable for
little children.
ABC FUN KEYS Ver. 4.40
----------------------
* The major change for this update was the addition of all new pictures
for the alphabet letters. The new pictures were illustrated by my
Mother, Becky Krehbiel. Becky is a professional children's artist and
has created many wonderful coloring books and elementary learning
books for children. Her touch adds an enormous amount of appeal and
enjoyment to this program. For those who are interested, the old set
of pictures is available as a free download from the ABC Bulletin
Board System at (619) 436-3525. If you prefer a copy by mail, it is
available for a handling charge of $6.00.
* An important change was made that affects only shareware users of ABC
Fun Keys. If a picture file is available for the letter, that picture
is shown and a nursery rhyme is played. If the picture is NOT
available, ABC displays a vector line drawing of the letter and plays
the same nursery rhyme song. Previous versions would not allow a
letter to be used if the full picture file was not available. This
feature is not relevant to registered users since the registered user
version has picture files for all the letters and numbers.
* Added the command line switches /F and /K. The /F switch allows the
user to turn off flashing background colors when a letter was
correctly identified. The /K switch prevents ABC from resetting the
keyboard NumLock, CapsLock, and ScrollLock keys. Some users were
having compatibility problems in this area.
* The registered user's name was added to the opening children's menu
screen.
ABC FUN KEYS VER. 4.30
----------------------
* The only change was an UPDATE to the MAILING ADDRESS. Due to lease
arrangements beyond our control, we are being forced to change our
address. Address changes are traumatic for shareware programs. We
will greatly appreciate your help to distribute this new version of
ABC Fun Keys to BBS's and shareware libraries.
ABC FUN KEYS VER. 4.21
----------------------
* Major addition was the integrated installation program, INSTALL.EXE.
This will automatically install the ABC program to hard or floppy
disk, unpack files if necessary, introduce the user to some of the
more important game configuration features, and allow the
documentation to be viewed and/or printed.
* Three minor program bugs were fixed. For the most part, these were
inconsequential. The most serious was a bug that could cause ABC to
hang in Heaven & Mud on very slow XT computers running monochrome
monitors.
ABC FUN KEYS VER. 4.20
----------------------
* Modified the opening "child's" menu to allow easier and more intuitive
entry into the setup features of the program. Setup and Help are now
Alt-S and Alt-H respectively.
* Changed the animation technique in Heaven and Mud. As a result,
pictures cross over each other better and move more realistically to
heaven or mud. Animation is smoother.
* Minor changes were made to the automatic speed selection in Heaven and
Mud. Performance is better on XT class computers.
* Changed the "Please Press a Key" window in Game 4 (Select) to a
graphic image. Keys that do not have a picture file associated with
them like "%" now have a graphic image of the key displayed on the
screen. The earlier error message has been eliminated.
* Added a surprise picture to the win and lose endings of Heaven and
Mud.
* Changed the "0" "O" and "i" "j" confusing typefaces in Heaven and Mud
to more easily distinguished symbols.
* Removed Num-Lock key from program use. It use to shut off the sound.
Unfortunately, it was confusing to many people.
* Rearranged many pictures to display better graphics in the Hercules
monochrome mode.
* Made the scrolling lyrics go completely across the top of the screen
instead of the upper left corner.
* Added a command line switch to turn off the scrolling lyrics for the
nursery rhyme songs.
* Made speed change in Heaven and Mud "semi-permanent" until the ABC is
exited. Speed and performance changes done in setup are permanent as
always.
* A few small bugs were fixed like new routines for turning the cursor
on and off -- hopefully no more lost cursor on a few graphics boards.
Also fixed an inappropriate use of color in one of the monochrome mode
help screens.
ABC FUN KEYS VER. 4.12
----------------------
* Added the command line parameter /T to allow the user to adjust the
tempo of the nursery rhyme songs.
* Made a slight change to correct an "operational inconsistency" that
caused a return to the adult setup menu on succeeding games. (Nice
euphemism for bug.)
ABC FUN KEYS VER. 4.11
----------------------
* Added a feature to the control panel to allow the number of pictures
played in a game to be limited. At the end of the selected number of
pictures, the "child's" menu is displayed.
* Fixed a small bug that caused the command line parameter /Q (totally
quiet operation) not to work correctly. (Blush)
ABC FUN KEYS VER. 4.10
----------------------
* Added on-screen scrolling lyrics for all twenty-seven nursery rhyme
songs.
* Many of the nursery rhyme melodies have been revised and improved.
* MANY THANKS * to Jeff Elhai of East Lansing, Michigan for these
corrections and improvements! Jeff also provided many of the other
suggestions that have been incorporated in this latest release. Thank
you Jeff!
* Shut off NUM Lock, Scroll Lock, and Caps Lock upon initial entry to
program to avoid confusion with several features.
* Added functional arrow keys to the opening kids menu.
* Added adjustable timing for Game 3 and the corresponding control panel
settings.
* Added an option for easy program restart and exit.
* Added an option to allow PrtScreen to function.
* The number of songs can be set with a command line parameter to allow
users to add their own songs.
* Made several changes to differentiate between the registered user and
shareware versions of the program in the opening copyright screen and
windowed "THANK YOU" screen.
* Many improvements were made in the documentation including separate
registration instant mailer, an index, hard disk instructions, and
"quick start" documentation.
ABC FUN KEYS VER. 4.00
----------------------
* Program completely re-written in Borland's Turbo C Ver.2.0 and Mike
Smeldey's excellent "CXL Extended Function Library" available as
shareware.
* Support for monochrome monitors using the Hercules graphics standard.
(This required a lot of code.)
* Addition of Game 2 -- Guess Quick.
* Addition of Game 3 -- Heaven & Mud.
* The addition of the Children's Picture Menu to open the game.
* The addition of command line control parameters.
* The addition of game configuration files to save letter and feature
selections.
* The addition of lower case letters in the alphabet picture files.
* A greatly improved Picture Selection & Control Menu.
* A help screen for the Picture Selection & Control Menu.
* The ability to synchronize the nursery rhyme songs to the pictures.
* Improved picture compression technique so the program takes up less
space on disk.
* Use of a single file for nursery rhyme songs to cut down on wasted
cluster space on disk. (I really had to work hard to get this program
to fit on a single diskette!).
